What is Positive Behaviour Support?

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is about getting to the heart of behaviours and finding the ‘why.’ We work with you, with your community and environment to improve your quality of life.  By reducing behaviours that put yourself or others at risk, and building practical strategies, PBS helps you lead a more fulfilling, and improved quality of life.

What kind of Behaviours Can Ignite Healthcare Support?

Our Behaviour Support Practitioners focus on maladaptive behaviours. These behaviours are actions that can negatively affect your well-being or the safety of others. This might include:

  • Physical harm
  • Self Injury
  • Inappropriate sexualised behaviour
  • Property damage
  • Verbal aggression
  • Social isolation

Our goal is to understand the triggers behind these behaviours and work with you and your community to reduce those behaviours and prioritise your safety, growth, and positive experiences so that you can live a more fulfilling life.

How Our Positive Behaviour Support Practitioners Help

Positive change happens when we work together. Our PBS team work alongside you and your support network to:

  • Understand the ‘why’ behind behaviours of concern
  • Set up short-term strategies to reduce harm (fast!) with an Interim Behaviour Support Plan
  • Educate and train your support network to better understand how to support your needs
  • Find proactive, safe strategies that reduce the need for restrictive practices
  • Tailor practical, respectful strategies that support you in your daily life
  • Create a personalised, Comprehensive Behaviour Support Plan
  • Develop Functional Behavioural Assessments to track progress and meaningful change

Lasting change starts with the right support, and we’re here to help make that happen.

You’re in Good Hands

Our NDIS registered team comes from diverse clinical backgrounds –  from social workers to psychologists and more. We’ve got proficient and advanced practitioners ready to support you.

And if you need someone with a specific focus (like CALD background and forensic experience), we do our best to make it happen.

We take our quality seriously because you deserve the best. Here’s how we make sure that you’re fully supported:

  • Our Clinical Excellence Lead oversees all cases
  • We peer-review all assessments and plans
  • Our team stay up to date with the latest practices with regular supervision and professional development
  • We collaborate across disciplines to get the best outcomes.

What happens During the PBS sessions?

Working on behaviour change is personal. That’s why we shape each session around you – your goals, and your needs – making sure you feel comfortable and heard.

Your sessions could be anything from a relaxed chat over tea to a trip to the trampoline park – whatever feels natural and makes progress possible.

Behind the scenes, your PBS Practitioner keeps the momentum going. We collect data, review incident reports, and connect with the important people in your life to build a plan that truly works for you. It’s a team effort, with you at the centre every step of the way.

  • If needed, guiding the use of restrictive practices with care and transparency

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

PBS falls under the Improved Relationships or Behaviour Support categories in your NDIS plan. It’s designed to help you achieve your goals and improve your quality of life by reducing challenging behaviours.

If you’re unsure whether your plan includes this, feel free to send it through with a referral – we’ll take a look and let you know.

If your plan doesn’t currently include PBS funding, we can assist by preparing a Positive Behaviour Support Access Report to help you request it. This assessment can also be billed under Capacity Building funding (the same category that Occupational Therapists, Speech Pathologists and Physiotherapists use).

If PBS isn’t listed in your NDIS plan, we can help by creating a Positive Behaviour Support Access Report to request funding. This report can be billed under Capacity Building – the same category used for Occupational Therapy, Speech Pathology, and Physiotherapy.

One of our Behaviour Support Practitioners will handle the process and guide you through the next steps.

PBS can sometimes be provided via telehealth, depending on your goals and the type of support you need.

For many participants, virtual sessions are great for planning, regular check-ins, and talking through strategies. But for assessments, direct observations, and hands-on support, in-person sessions are usually the best fit. We’ll work with you to figure out what works best – blending telehealth and face-to-face where it makes sense.
